Retiring to Tauranga

Nestled quietly amongst New Zealand’s eastern coastline is a city that’s got the whole country talking. Tauranga — it’s home to New Zealand’s fastest growing population (overtaking Dunedin as the fifth largest city in the country) and it’s got retirees packing their bags and making a pilgrimage in big numbers.

From the affordable cost of living, laidback lifestyle, nearby holiday spots, and developing infrastructure, it’s easy to see what’s making the city so appealing as a retirement hot spot.

The Bay of Plenty lifestyle

Stretching from the Coromandel Peninsula to Cape Runaway, the Bay of Plenty is defined by its variety of beaches, harbour views, open green spaces, and heavily forested ranges.

Sitting between Mount Maunganui and Papamoa, Tauranga is at the heartland of the Western Bay of Plenty, and epitomises what makes the region such a great place to live.

The slower pace of life is perfect for retirees looking to relax and unwind, while it’s natural beauty, comfortable climate, art galleries, food markets, and other outdoor activities ensure there’s never room for boredom.

Tauranga residents are also quick to tell you how little time they spend in traffic compared to Auckland, while still enjoying all the benefits that come with city life — lucky for some!

Cost of living

One of the main reasons Tauranga has become such a draw for retirees is its affordable cost of living.

Compared to Auckland (via numbeo.com):

  • Rent prices are 20% cheaper
  • Consumer prices are 8% lower
  • Buying an apartment will cost you 41% less

The average house price in Tauranga is just over $700,000 compared to Auckland’s $1,000,000 plus — it’s a no brainer, right? (via QV.co.nz).

Infrastructure

Due to Tauranga’s large aging population, there’s been a boom in retirement infrastructure over the past few years. With 17% of people aged over 75 years choosing to live in retirement homes, this trend is likely to continue.

From Tauranga Hospital, to the city’s various Hospice centres, mental health care facilities, and specialist medical services, Tauranga is well equipped to deal with the responsibilities of supporting an older population.

To support this growth over $100 million in resource consents are being issued year on year. There’s also existing large-scale projects like the Melrose Retirement Village, two major Metlifecare projects, Papamoa Beach Village, and over 30 other retirement villages, in the city.

Predictions are that this is just the beginning of Tauranga’s retirement boom — Simon Wallace – NZ Aged Care Association Chief Executive says the number of age care residents in Tauranga is likely to increase by 41% within the next 10 years.
