Thinking of working in Perth? You’re in good company. Between 2006 and 2016, a record number of Aussies, Kiwis and international expats flocked to Western Australia in hopes of high-powered, highly paid work. Many of these job seekers were wildly successful – employment came easily, the paychecks were big, and the natural beauty and laid back lifestyle of Perth was the icing on the cake.
Unfortunately this momentum was unsustainable, and the city’s historically job-rich market hit a low point between 2014 and 2016. Experts hailed that the ‘mining boom’ in Western Australia was officially over, and the level of unemployment in Perth slowly started to rise.
Fear not! Perth’s economic revival is underway.
The doom and gloom purported by economists and recruiters during this time has proven to be misguided, as last year signaled a huge turn-around for the local job market.
According to The Age, over 40,000 new jobs were created in Perth between January and September 2017. This has been partially achieved by new government initiatives to drive growth, as well as the rapidly expanding health services industry, which is now the biggest employer in the state with over 40,000 staff members.
While these new developments are helping to create a positive change, confidence is also returning to Perth’s keystone industries.
ABC News recently reported that between August 2016 and August 2017:
– Advertisements for mining, resource and energy jobs increased by 52%
– Construction job listings also increased by 35%
– Other trade and service positions rose by 23%.
Much more than mining — Perth’s top 10 industries.
What other jobs are out there? Not interested in mining or health care? According to Perth’s ‘Economy Profile’, here are the city’s top 10 industries with the highest number of jobs:
1. Professional, scientific and technical services
2. Public administration and safety
3. Health care and social assistance
4. Mining
5. Financial and insurance services
6. Accommodation and food services
7. Education and training
8. Construction
9. Administrative and support services
10. Retail trade
What does this mean for you?
If you’re looking for an adventure, a chance to climb the economic ladder, or you’re just up for a bit of a change, there’s never been a better time to consider a move to Perth.
With the economy picking up momentum, new industries are opening up to prospective employees, and the foundational trades that the city was built on are re-gaining strength.
Pair these economic opportunities with the city’s outstanding natural beauty; including Swan River and the white-sand coastline, and a second-to-none lifestyle, it’s understandable why Perth is reknowned by many as a super city.
