Christchurch is known as the Garden City, and for good reason. Scattered throughout the city and its suburbs are many beautiful public parks and other green spaces, with the jewel in Christchurch’s crown being Hagley Park, situated within easy walking distance of the city’s central business district. Christchurch is seen as New Zealand’s most English city, and is famed for its vibrant arts scene, dramatic scenery and the beautiful Canterbury region, all capped off by the Southern Alps mountain range, which is visible from most parts of the city.
Christchurch is New Zealand’s second-largest city and with its international airport, serves as the gateway to the south island, with extensive transport links to all the major centres and tourist attractions that the south island is justifiably famous for, with New Zealand’s adventure playgrounds of Queenstown and Wanaka just a short flight away.
Since the earthquakes in September 2010 and February 2011, Christchurch has undergone considerable redevelopment, and has seen the central business district and the rest of the city undergo significant rebuilding, and while this is a long-term project, the progress that has been made allowed the city to host a number of games for the 2015 Cricket World Cup.
There are many tourist attractions in Christchurch, International Antarctic Centre , Orana Park and Willowbank Wildlife Park. The local tourist authority’s website has many more ideas for places to visit and activities in Christchurch and across the Canterbury region.
Since the earthquakes, Christchurch has been steadily rebuilding and improving its housing stock, as there are accommodation shortages in some areas of the city. Crown Christchurch’s experienced and helpful staff have built up extensive links with the local business community, and they will be able to help you find accommodation to suit your needs.

When it comes time to convert your money to New Zealand dollars, it’s highly recommended that you do so via online transferal companies, as opposed to cash or travellers cheques. This is because banks are known to charge very high rates when dealing with these.
When moving overseas, it’s important to find a reliable service for converting your money online. Using the right service can help you save a significant amount. For more details, learn about our Money Transfer Services.
Something else that could come in handy is opening up a New Zealand bank account before arriving in the country. This makes the transferal process of your converted money much easier and again minimises the extra costs that are commonly involved with this process.
There are a number of banks that offer easy, online sign up services, including; Westpac, Kiwibank and Bank of New Zealand.
Christchurch’s public transport bus network covers the whole city, operated by Metro and Red Bus, and there are limited public bus services across the wider Canterbury region. There are over 150 schools in Christchurch, with combined enrolments of some 57,500 primary and secondary school children. Since the earthquakes in September 2010 and February 2011, the city and surrounding area’s educational establishments have undergone considerable reorganisation with a number of schools being merged, and others moving to new sites. Because of this, please refer to the Ministry of Education to help you choose. With regards to higher education, there are two universities in Christchurch, the University of Canterbury and Lincoln University.
Christchurch’s cultural diversity, vibrant art and creative scene make for an established social environment, with constant opportunities to meet people from all walks of life. Because of this unique atmosphere, expatriates do not have trouble to blend into the wider Christchurch community. Opportunities to form closer-knit groups arise through children’s school activities and events, as well as through sports teams, sporting fixtures, and hobby or special interest groups. There are also a number of reputable singles networks in the local area that arrange sightseeing trips, restaurant dinners and weekend events.
